Beijing-based German artist and curator Martin Wehmer brings together a collection of abstract conceptual paintings from the German-speaking world. It is a topical collection of works that serve as artistic research and explore painting as an art form. "This exhibition is about systems," explains Wehmer. The show is inspired by the work of German sociologist Niklas Luhmann, who believes that society is made up of independent and self-referential systems. Every artist works within a system, and the artists selected combine different systems to create something new. The exhibition itself forms a system of its own, covering the artists' positions and commenting on the biennale as a system. The exhibition also provides a tension between "old" Western art and a "new" Chinese system.
